Why not to skip breakfast

For all those of you who skip breakfast everyday, here’s something you should know.

Abstaining from eating this important meal can lead to physical, intellectual and behavioural problems in the long run. Kids need it even more than adults because their developing bodies need regular intake of food. Studies also show that children who eat breakfast do better in school. Eating a healthy, wholesome, breakfast charges you up to face the day, making you more efficient and alert.

Skipping your first meal to catch a few extra winks will do you more harm than good. If you’re avoiding eating breakfast to lose weight, remember you’re more likely to put on weight instead of losing it. You will tend to eat more during your next meal or indulge in extra snacks to curb your hunger thereby causing your diet to go for a toss. Experts say you tend to accumulate more body fat when you eat fewer and larger meals than when you consume the same amount of calories in smaller and frequent meals. When you skip breakfast, your energy levels tend to be lower because you’re starting your day on an empty stomach thereby affecting performance levels. Eat it within two hours of waking up. This kick-starts your metabolism — and provides your body with the necessary fuel that it needs to burn energy efficiently.

A healthy breakfast should ideally comprise protein, fibre and the right amount of carbohydrates. You can obtain protein from low fat meats, eggs, beans, cottage cheese, nuts and dairy products while fibre is found in whole grains, vegetables and fruits. Protein helps repair muscle and maintaining hunger levels while adequate good carbs will give your body long term energy. Experts recommend a hard boiled egg, an orange, apple or a banana and a bowl of whole grain cereal with low fat milk as a healthy choice and say you should stay away from cereals, syrups and pastries that are high in sugar content. Studies also say that people who eat breakfast have better memory and cognitive functions.
